Which Is Better for Your Health: Lemon or Lime?

What do you prefer, lemon or a lime? They are almost alike, right? Of course, they do differ in size, color, and flavor, but many people in the world consider them the same. Lemons and limes obviously belong to the same family of fruits and they both are citrus fruits. They are almost similar when it comes to their nutritional benefits, but, still, they have differences as well. If you don’t have any lemons at home, you can just limes instead.

The Differences

Lemons are scientifically called Citrus limon, while limes are known as Citrus aurantifolia. These two are easily distinguishable through their colors where lemons are yellow in both flesh and skin and limes have the green color on their skin and flesh. When it comes to size, lemons are larger, usually two to three inches in diameter. Limes are generally only one to two inches in diameter.

When it comes to taste, lemons are quite sour, while limes can be sweet, but they can also be bitter. As for their shape, lemons are oval and limes are round. There are limes though that are also oval in shape. Nutrients-wise, because lemons and limes are citrus fruits, they are rich in vitamin C. However, lemons have a slight edge as they almost have two times more vitamin C than the other – 53 milligrams and 29 milligrams for every 100 grams of lemon and lime respectively. Additionally, lemons have more potassium and folate than limes, but limes contain more vitamin A than their cousins.

The Similarities

Aside from the ones mentioned above, there is nothing more different in lemons and limes, particularly when it comes to the nutrients they offer. Both are excellent sources of folate, vitamin A and vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. These two fruits have flavonoids that can prevent you from having cancer.

Both lemons and limes also have limonoids that are known to be potent when it comes to fighting carcinogens. Therefore, lemons and limes are believed to be effective in removing cells that may cause cancer. Lemons and limes can also “alkalize” the body. This is helpful in neutralizing the wastes that are extra acidic. When you have too much acid in the body, this can lead to cellular damage. Experts also say too much acid results to inflammation, which is harmful as it is discovered to be one of the causes of serious illnesses, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

So, what’s the bottom line? They both are amazing, healthy and delicious fruits. Lemons have a little bit of advantage over limes in some areas, but there is no doubt that they both are amazing and extremely beneficial for your health.
